Ischia, or the green isle, is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, it is a very popular destination and is visited in all seasons by travelers from the world over, who are in search of “benessere”. Legend has it that the gods once bathed and swam in the thermal waters of Ischia. Ischia’s thermal springs are nutrient rich, containing mineral elements important for body healing. Famous for the quality of its waters and the landscape that is the backdrop for spas and thermal parks, the use of the thermal mineral waters for therapeutic reasons dates back to Greek times. Poseidon and Negombo are the most famous and largest of the thermal parks on the island and visitors can enjoy water and mud therapies and alternative health treatments The main centre of the island is Ischia, made up of the two hubs of the Port, bathing and thermal venues, Ponte, a characteristic village dominated by the Aragonese Castle, and also the enchanting towns of Casamicciola Terme, and Lacco Armeno with their spring waters. Forio, holds onto its strong tradition of fisherman’s village. Near to Forio is the spectacular gardens of Villa La Mortella, home of the composer Sir. William Walton, projected by the landscape architect Russell Page. On the southern part of the island is Sant’Angelo, a tiny fishing village which has become an elegant tourist attraction. The island of Ischia is also well known for its famous wines and a cuisine strongly anchored in tradition.
